They call him the peace dog. His name is Aloka, which means "light" in Sanskrit. He has a white heart on his forehead. He followed the monks for 112 days in India, then took a plane to America, and now walks ahead of everyone - always ahead. When a car hit him near Houston, he refused to get in a vehicle. He continued on foot. This is his portrait: eyes that have seen a thousand miles and know there are still many more. But he looks forward. Always forward.

🐕 The Soul of This Artwork

"They call him the peace dog. He has a white heart on his forehead. And he always looks forward."

Aloka is not just the mascot of the Walk for Peace. He is its beating heart. This golden-furred Indian Pariah began following Buddhist monks in India, accompanied them for 112 days of walking, and when it was time to fly to America, he boarded the plane with them.

In this artwork I capture him in his element: the path, monks in the background, the open horizon before him. He wears the orange bandana that has become his symbol. The dripping effect at the bottom represents the roots each of his steps plants in the soil of humanity.
